TL;DR — Word to PowerPoint with AI
- Word's "Export to PowerPoint" button is going away. Microsoft says the Word for the web feature is being retired; a Microsoft MVP reported it gone at the end of March 2025 and pointed users to Copilot.
- The free built-in route still works: PowerPoint's Slides from Outline turns each Heading 1 in your .docx into a slide and each Heading 2 into a bullet. Body text is skipped.
- Copilot and the ChatGPT add-in build a first draft inside PowerPoint. Copilot needs Copilot access in your Microsoft plan; ChatGPT for PowerPoint is a beta open to every ChatGPT tier, Free included.
- Online converters (Gamma, Adobe, Plus AI, Presentations.AI) restyle your text quickly. Canva's "Docs to Decks" is no longer available.
- For a deck people decide from, NOXI rebuilds the document into an argument with sources on the slides, in your template or the style of any PDF or PPTX you upload, and exports a pixel-perfect PowerPoint, free.
Quick answer: Word's own "Export to PowerPoint" is being retired, so there are five routes today. PowerPoint's free Slides from Outline turns each Heading 1 into a slide. Copilot and the ChatGPT add-in draft slides inside PowerPoint. Online converters restyle your text. NOXI rebuilds the document into a designed, sourced deck in your template, free.
Disclosure: NOXI publishes this guide, and NOXI is Way 5. The ways run from the built-in route to the fullest rebuild; each one gets its real strengths, and every fact about another company is cited, from the vendor's own pages wherever they loaded, checked on September 28, 2026.
This guide is about Word files specifically: heading styles, Word's retired export button, and the tools that take a .docx directly. If your source is a PDF, a scanned report or an exported deck, our PDF to presentation guide covers what changes with that format.
Word to PowerPoint: the 5 ways at a glance
Pick the route by what you need the slides to do. If you only need your headings on slides, the free built-in import is exact. If you need a deck that argues something, you need a tool that rewrites and designs.
| Way | Cost | Your text | Design | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Slides from Outline | Free (desktop) | Headings only | Your theme | Outlines, agendas |
| 2. Copilot in PowerPoint | Copilot plan | Rewritten | Org template | Microsoft 365 teams |
| 3. ChatGPT for PowerPoint | Free tier (beta) | Rewritten | Basic | Drafts in the open deck |
| 4. Online converters | Free tries, paid | Kept or rewritten | Tool themes | Quick restyle |
| 5. NOXI | Free | Kept or rebuilt | Your style | Decision decks |
Where did Word's "Export to PowerPoint" go?
It was a Word for the web feature, and Microsoft is retiring it. The support page for it now opens with a notice that the option "is being deprecated" and that after retirement it "will no longer be accessible" in Word [1]. Microsoft gives no date on that page.
The feature lived under File > Export > Export to PowerPoint presentation in Word for the web: you picked a design theme, and AI turned your headings into slide titles with imagery and icons, in English only [1]. On March 24, 2025, a Microsoft MVP posting on Microsoft Tech Community reported that it had been "retired as of end of March 2025" without a pop-up or warning, and recommended asking Copilot in PowerPoint to build the deck from the Word file instead [2].
How a Word document maps to slides
Every conversion tool reads the same signals in a .docx: headings, body text, tables and images. Microsoft's own advice for Copilot is to use Word styles so it understands the document's structure and how to split it into slides [5].
| Word element | Becomes on a slide | Prepare it by |
|---|---|---|
| Title, subtitle | Title slide | Title style, not bold Normal |
| Heading 1 | A new slide or section | One idea per heading |
| Heading 2 | Points on that slide | Short, parallel phrasing |
| Body paragraphs | Key message, notes | Topic sentence first |
| Tables | Comparison table or chart | Header row, units, caption |
| Images | Visuals on relevant slides | In line with text, captioned |
| Numbered steps | Process or timeline | Word's numbering, dates |
| Footnotes, references | Source lines | Keep full source names |
| Appendices | Backup slides | Label "Appendix" |
| Comments, tracked changes | Nothing | Accept all, delete comments |
The most common failure starts here: section titles typed as bold Normal text look structured to a person and flat to software. Open View > Navigation Pane in Word; if your titles don't appear there, no tool can see them.
Way 1: PowerPoint's "Slides from Outline" (free, no AI)
Slides from Outline is the free, exact route: PowerPoint creates a new slide for each Heading 1 in your document and turns Heading 2 text into bullets on that slide [3][4]. It changes nothing and summarises nothing, which is its strength when your headings already say what you want on screen.
Step 1 — Apply heading styles in Word
Apply Heading 1 to every line that should be a slide title and Heading 2 to every point that should be a bullet. Microsoft also describes doing this in View > Outline, where Level 1 becomes slide headings and Level 2 becomes bullet points [4]. Then save and close the document.
Step 2 — Import it into PowerPoint
On Windows, open PowerPoint and choose Home > New Slide > Slides from Outline, select the Word file and click Insert [3]. On a Mac, click the arrow next to New Slide on the Home tab and choose Outline; Microsoft's Mac steps refer to .rtf or .txt files, so save a copy of the document as Rich Text Format first [3].
Step 3 — Apply a theme and add what didn't come across
Apply your template or a Design theme. Then add tables, images and key figures by hand, because the import carries heading text only.
What to know before you rely on it. Text in the Normal style is not imported at all, so body paragraphs never reach the slides [3]. If the document has no Heading 1 or Heading 2 styles, PowerPoint creates a slide for every paragraph [3], which can turn a 12-page report into dozens of slides. The feature needs desktop PowerPoint; it isn't supported in PowerPoint for the web [3].
When a page must stay exactly as written (a signed letter, a one-page form), use Insert > Object > Create from file instead. Microsoft describes the result as a static snapshot of the document on the slide [4].
Way 2: Copilot in PowerPoint, from a Word file
Copilot in PowerPoint is the route the MVP post points to in place of the export button: it builds a draft presentation from a Word document you point it to, including images from the document and speaker notes [5][7]. It needs Copilot access in your Microsoft plan.
Who has it. Microsoft's FAQ says that with Copilot Pro (home) you can create a presentation from a single Word file, and with Microsoft Copilot (work) you can also use a PDF, with encrypted files included [6]. If the Copilot button is missing, Microsoft says it may not be included in your subscription or may not be available under your organisation's settings [5].
How it works. Open a new presentation, ideally from your organisation's template, because Copilot then uses the template's existing layouts [5]. Open Copilot, ask it to create a presentation from a file, and choose your Word document. Microsoft's guidance for good results [5]:
- Use Word styles so Copilot understands the document's structure.
- Include the images you want on slides; Copilot tries to incorporate images found in the Word document.
- Keep the file under 24 MB, which Microsoft says is where Copilot works best.
- Expect one output language per presentation.
Two details trip people up. When you create from a file, you can't add extra instructions in the same prompt, so set the audience and length in a follow-up message [5]. And the newer Agent Mode can't reference files yet; Microsoft says that support is "coming soon" [5].
Way 3: ChatGPT for PowerPoint (add-in)
ChatGPT for PowerPoint is OpenAI's add-in that works in a side panel inside PowerPoint. It launched in beta on May 21, 2026 and is open to every ChatGPT tier, Free included [8]. You can upload a document and have it build slides from it [8].
How to use it with a Word file. In PowerPoint, go to Home > Add-ins, search for ChatGPT and sign in with your OpenAI account [8]. Attach the Word document in the panel and describe the deck: audience, slide count, what to keep verbatim. The slides stay editable in PowerPoint.
What OpenAI says about the beta. OpenAI notes that complex template and font handling, and some chart, shape and formatting edits, are not fully supported yet, and recommends reviewing the add-in's changes before accepting them [8]. In practice, that makes it strongest for drafting and rewriting inside a deck you then style yourself.
Way 4: Online converters (and what happened to Canva)
Web converters take a .docx, generate slides in their own themes, and let you download a PowerPoint file. They are the fastest way to get something that looks designed, and most have a free try.
| Tool | Word import | Free use | Download |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gamma | .docx, 200 MB | Badge on exports | PPTX, PDF |
| Adobe Acrobat / Express | .docx | A few generations | PowerPoint, PDF |
| Plus AI tool | .docx | No sign-up | PPT, Google Slides |
| Presentations.AI | Word to PPT | Free to try | PowerPoint |
| Canva Docs to Decks | Discontinued | — | — |
Gamma imports Word files up to 200 MB. You can ask it to keep your text "exactly as written", or use the "Preserve this exact text" option in its classic generator [9]. It exports PPTX and PDF; on the Free plan, exports carry a "Made by Gamma" badge, which paid plans remove [10]. Its strength is speed and web-style layouts that suit a deck shared as a link.
Adobe's "Generate presentation" in Acrobat and Adobe Express takes Word .docx, PDF, TXT and Excel files, drafts an outline you can edit, then builds a deck you can download as PowerPoint or PDF. Free-plan users get a few complimentary generations, after which it needs an Adobe Express Premium, Teams or Enterprise plan [11]. Its strength is Adobe Express's design tools, images and brand controls.
Plus AI offers a free Word-to-PPT page with no sign-up that returns a PowerPoint download or a Google Slides link [12]. Its main add-in for PowerPoint and Google Slides starts with a 7-day trial; plans start at $10 a month billed annually, with document uploads in Pro at $20 a month [13].
Presentations.AI added a Word to PPT tool on September 21, 2026, one of 13 "free-to-try" converters that it says interpret headings, tables and images; free use may be capped by credits, file size, slide count or plan [14].
Canva no longer converts documents into decks: its help centre says Docs to Decks "is no longer available", with no confirmed plans to return, and suggests copying content into a presentation or starting from a template instead [15]. Canva remains a strong choice for templates and social graphics.
Way 5: NOXI rebuilds your Word document into a decision deck
NOXI reads the whole Word document the way an analyst would: it finds the recommendation, groups the evidence behind it, and gives each point a slide with a headline that states the takeaway. Tables become comparison tables and scorecards, dated steps become Gantt timelines, and options become side-by-side layouts, in consulting-grade designs.
Three things set it apart for Word files:
- Your style, from any file. Apply your brand template, or upload any PDF or PPTX whose look you want, and NOXI generates the deck in that style. Few AI presentation tools can do this.
- Sources on the slide. Where the document leaves a gap (a market size, a benchmark, a regulation), NOXI researches it and puts the source link for each figure on the slide.
- Kept or rebuilt, your choice. Tell it to keep your headings and wording, or to rebuild the storyline for a new audience. Your Word document stays the source of truth.
NOXI is free, with every feature included: no watermark, no export paywall, no card. It uses Claude Opus and GPT-5.5 for content and Nano Banana Pro for images, and it works in a phone browser too. Arabic Word documents keep their right-to-left direction at the design level, with mirrored timelines, arrows and tables. Here is the full method.
Step 1 — Upload the Word file and anything that goes with it
Start a new deck in NOXI and upload the .docx, plus any supporting files: the Excel or CSV behind its tables, photos, notes. NOXI builds from Word, PDF, Excel/CSV, notes and images together, so no figure has to be retyped.
Step 2 — Choose the style
Pick your brand template, or upload a PDF or PPTX whose look you want (last quarter's board deck, a client's template), and the new deck follows that style. Our guide to AI presentations in your own template covers this step in detail.
Step 3 — Write a one-paragraph brief
Say who the deck is for, how long you'll present and what you want decided. Then set the rules: "keep my Heading 1s as slide titles" or "rebuild the storyline for the steering committee"; "use only the figures in my document"; "use the photos in my document as-is". The prompts below have copy-ready versions.
Step 4 — Generate, then read only the titles
Read the slide titles in a row before any slide in detail. If they tell the story on their own, the structure works. If not, fix it by chat: "merge slides 4 and 5", "move the budget before the timeline", "turn the options table into a comparison slide with a recommendation".
Step 5 — Check every figure against the document
Put the Word file next to the deck and tick off each number. Even frontier models invent figures 3–18% of the time depending on the task [16], and one wrong number in front of a committee costs the deck its credibility. For the context NOXI researched, open the source link on each slide and confirm it says what the slide says.
Step 6 — Polish and export
Make structural changes by chat and small ones by hand in the drag-and-drop editor: a label, a colour, a column width. Then export an editable PowerPoint for colleagues, a PDF for the pre-read, or a share link for quick review.

Exporting to PowerPoint: what arrives in the .pptx
A deck built from a Word document usually goes back into Microsoft Office, where colleagues add slides and edit numbers, so the PowerPoint file has to match what you approved and stay editable. Many AI tools make .pptx files by printing slides to PDF and running a converter, which can flatten text, split headings and swap fonts.
NOXI builds the .pptx with its own export engine, rebuilding each slide as real PowerPoint objects:
- Pixel-perfect: the file matches the approved slide, with the same layout, spacing, colours and typography on real 16:9 slides.
- Live text: every headline, bullet and table cell is editable in PowerPoint.
- Embedded fonts: the deck looks the same on a laptop that doesn't have the fonts installed, and Arabic letters stay connected with right-to-left layout intact.
- Original image quality, and the file opens in PowerPoint without a repair prompt. No watermark, free.
Almost no other AI presentation tool exports PowerPoint this way. For a closer look at how AI tools produce .pptx files, see our AI PowerPoint generator guide.
Worked example: a 14-page Word proposal becomes a 10-slide decision deck
The document. A 14-page Word proposal to replace the company's warehouse management system (WMS): eight Heading 1 sections plus an appendix, four tables and two photos of the current picking process. The steering committee has 20 minutes for it on Thursday.
Route 1, Slides from Outline, produces nine slides titled exactly like the Heading 1s, with the Heading 2 lines as bullets. It is accurate and fast, but the numbers live in body text and tables, so none reach the slides, and no title says what to decide.
Route 5, a rebuild, keeps the same facts and changes the job of each slide:
| Word heading | Outline import title | Rebuilt slide title |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Executive summary | Executive summary | Option B saves $660K a year and pays back in 26 months |
| 2. Background | Background | (merged into slide 3) |
| 3. Problems with the current system | Problems with the current system | The current WMS costs us about $840K a year |
| 4. Options considered | Options considered | Of three options, B scores best on cost, risk and time |
| 5. Recommended option | Recommended option | Option B: a cloud WMS rolled out site by site |
| 6. Costs and benefits | Costs and benefits | $1.44M one-time buys a $660K net saving each year |
| 7. Implementation plan | Implementation plan | Both sites live by September 2027, clear of peak season |
| 8. Risks and mitigations | Risks and mitigations | Data migration is the top risk; a parallel run covers it |
| Appendix A. Vendor scoring | Appendix A | Backup: vendor scoring detail |
| — | — | Decision today: approve Option B and $1.44M |
How the numbers hang together. The $840K is $310K in pick errors, $450K in overtime and $80K in maintenance. The proposal expects Option B to remove those costs for $180K a year in subscription and support: a net saving of $660K a year. At $1.44M one-time, payback is $1.44M ÷ $0.66M ≈ 2.2 years, about 26 months. The options table becomes a three-column comparison with Option B highlighted, the dated plan becomes a Gantt timeline with peak season shaded, and the two photos go on the problem slide as they are.
The difference. The outline import's titles read like a table of contents. The rebuilt titles read like the case itself, and the committee can follow it from the titles alone. That structure is the one in our guide to consulting-style slides.

How to prepare any Word document for conversion
Ten minutes of cleanup in Word improves every route above, including the free one. Work on a copy and keep the original.
- Use real heading styles.Heading 1 for each main section, Heading 2 for its points. Check that they show in View > Navigation Pane.
- One idea per Heading 1.A section called "Background and objectives" wants to be two slides; split it now.
- Put the conclusion first in each section.A topic sentence that states the point gives any tool, and any reader, the slide's message.
- Accept tracked changes and delete comments.Review > Accept > Accept All Changes, then delete all comments, so no tool reads a deleted sentence or a reviewer's note as content.
- Give every table a header row and units."Cost ($K)" instead of "Cost". Merged cells and tables used for layout confuse every converter.
- Keep images in line with the text and captioned.Floating images placed over text are hard to match to the right section.
- Remove what shouldn't be a slide.Cover page, table of contents, legal boilerplate and revision history. Move long detail to a section labelled "Appendix".
- Keep full source names in footnotes."Eurostat, 2025" is usable on a slide; "ibid." is not.
- Check the file size.Copilot works best under 24 MB [5]; compress large photos (Picture Format > Compress Pictures) if the document is heavy.
7 copy-ready prompts for turning a Word document into slides
Paste these into NOXI after uploading your .docx, or into any AI tool that can read the file, and replace the brackets.
Turn the attached Word report into a [10]-slide executive summary for [the leadership team]. Slide 2 states the main conclusion and the three reasons behind it. Every slide title is a full-sentence takeaway of at most 15 words. Use only the facts and figures in my document, and put supporting detail in the speaker notes.
Build the deck from my document's structure: each Heading 1 becomes one slide with that heading as its title, and each Heading 2 becomes a point on that slide. Don't reword my headings. Under each point, add at most one short line taken from the body text of that section.
For every table in my document, create a separate slide that shows it as the clearest visual: a comparison table, a bar chart or a scorecard. Keep the numbers and units exactly as in the document, write a title that states what the table shows, and add the table's caption as the source line.
This Word document is a proposal. Rebuild it as a [10]-slide decision deck for [the steering committee]: problem and its cost, options compared, recommendation, cost and benefit, timeline as a Gantt, top risks with mitigations, and a final slide stating the decision we need today. Use the photos in my document as-is on the relevant slides.
Turn my attached essay into an [8]-minute class presentation of [8] slides. Slide 1: title and my thesis in one sentence. Then one slide per main argument with a title that states it, one piece of evidence and a visual. Last slide: conclusion and my sources. Keep my wording where possible; don't add arguments I didn't make.
Build the deck from my document, and where it makes a claim without a figure, such as market size, growth rate or industry benchmark, research the most recent reliable figure and put the source link on the slide. Mark clearly which figures come from my document and which you researched.
Use the attached [PPTX / PDF] as the style reference: colours, fonts, title placement and layout density. Build the new deck from my Word document in exactly that style, and keep our logo in the same position on every slide.
Which way should you choose?
Match the route to the document and the audience. Each of these tools is the right answer for someone.
| Your situation | Best route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Agenda or outline, headings ready | Slides from Outline | Free, exact, seconds |
| Company on Microsoft 365 Copilot | Copilot in PowerPoint | Org layouts, in-tenant |
| Drafting inside an open deck | ChatGPT for PowerPoint | Free tier, good writing |
| A deck to share as a web link | Gamma | Web-style cards |
| Social graphics from the same content | Canva (manual) | Templates, graphics |
| Report or proposal for decision-makers | NOXI | Argument, sources, your style |
| Arabic Word document | NOXI | Design-level RTL |
Word to Google Slides
To end up in Google Slides, create the PowerPoint file with any route above and bring it across. Upload the .pptx to Google Drive, open it and choose Open with Google Slides; Google notes that edits then save back to the original Office file [17]. To add the slides to an existing Google deck, use File > Import slides [18].
Inside Google Slides, Gemini can also generate a full presentation grounded in files you add from Drive as sources. Google launched this on June 30, 2026, in English (US) only, on eligible Workspace and Google AI plans, and its help page says it works on desktop [19][20]. Our guide to AI in Google Slides compares the options.
Converting Word to PowerPoint on a phone or a Mac
On a phone, use a browser-based tool, since Slides from Outline needs desktop PowerPoint [3]. NOXI runs in a phone browser: upload the .docx from your Files app or Drive, write the brief, generate, and share the deck from the same phone.
On a Mac, save a copy of the document as Rich Text Format and use New Slide > Outline (Way 1, step 2). Browser-based tools, NOXI included, work the same on a Mac as anywhere else.
5 common mistakes when turning Word into PowerPoint
1. Importing a document without heading styles. PowerPoint then makes one slide per paragraph [3]. Fix: apply Heading 1 and Heading 2 first.
2. One slide per page. A 14-page document doesn't need 14 slides; it needs one slide per idea the audience must take away. Fix: plan the titles first, then fill the slides.
3. Pasting paragraphs onto slides. Prose written for reading fails on a screen. Fix: one message per slide, detail in the speaker notes.
4. Topic titles. "Costs and benefits" tells the room nothing. Fix: "$1.44M one-time buys a $660K net saving each year".
5. Not checking the numbers. Any AI can transpose a figure. Fix: tick off each number against the Word file before presenting.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert a Word document to PowerPoint with AI?
- Upload the .docx to an AI presentation tool, say who the deck is for and how long you will present, and generate. NOXI rebuilds the document into a designed deck in your template and exports an editable PowerPoint, free. Copilot in PowerPoint and the ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in can also draft slides from a Word file. Check every figure before presenting.
- Can I convert Word to PowerPoint with AI for free?
- Yes. NOXI is free with no watermark and no export paywall. The ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in is available on the free ChatGPT tier as a beta. Without AI, PowerPoint's Slides from Outline is free in the desktop app. Gamma, Adobe, Plus AI and Presentations.AI have free plans, free tools or free tries alongside paid tiers.
- Why can't I find Export to PowerPoint in Word?
- Microsoft is retiring it. The feature was in Word for the web, under File > Export > Export to PowerPoint presentation, and worked in English only. Microsoft's support page says it is being deprecated, and users reported it gone at the end of March 2025. Use Slides from Outline, Copilot or another tool instead.
- How do I convert Word to PowerPoint without losing formatting?
- Decide what you need to keep, because a page layout is not a slide layout. To keep your wording, use Slides from Outline or ask an AI tool to keep your text exactly. To keep a page exactly as it looks, use Insert > Object > Create from file. To keep your brand, generate the deck in your template.
- Why does PowerPoint create a slide for every paragraph when I import a Word document?
- Because the document has no Heading 1 or Heading 2 styles. Slides from Outline makes a new slide for each Heading 1 and bullets from Heading 2, and without them it creates a slide per paragraph. Apply heading styles in Word, save, and import again.
- Can Copilot turn a Word document into a PowerPoint?
- Yes, with Copilot access. Copilot in PowerPoint can create a presentation from a single Word file with Copilot Pro, and work accounts can also use a PDF. Microsoft says it works best with Word files under 24 MB that use Word styles, and file referencing is not yet available in Agent Mode.
- Can ChatGPT convert a Word document to PowerPoint?
- Yes. The ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in, in beta since May 21, 2026 and open to every ChatGPT tier including Free, can build slides from an uploaded document inside PowerPoint. OpenAI says complex template and font handling is not fully supported yet, so review and style the result.
- Does Canva still convert documents to presentations?
- No. Canva's help centre says the Convert to Presentation (Docs to Decks) feature is no longer available, with no confirmed plans to bring it back. Canva suggests adding slides inside a Canva Doc, copying content into a presentation, or starting from a template.
- How do I convert Word to PowerPoint on my phone?
- Use a browser-based tool, because PowerPoint's Slides from Outline needs the desktop app. NOXI works in a phone browser: upload the .docx from your files or Drive, describe the deck, generate it, and share a link or export PowerPoint.
- How do I turn a Word document into Google Slides?
- Create a PowerPoint from the Word file, upload the .pptx to Google Drive and choose Open with Google Slides, or use File > Import slides in an existing deck. On eligible plans, Gemini in Google Slides can also build a deck with Drive files added as sources, in English (US).
