Quick answer: Use Perplexity if every answer needs a source you can click: its Pro page says every answer includes inline citations, and Pro lets you choose between models from several companies. Use ChatGPT if you want images, files, voice and the broadest free plan in one app, or the cheapest paid tier (Go, $8 a month). On seven printed rules checked on 24 October 2026, ChatGPT scores 90 and Perplexity 65, and citations are not one of the rules. Check the citation either way.
Most Perplexity vs ChatGPT (or ChatGPT vs Perplexity) articles still describe 2024 or 2025 plans. This one reads both companies' own pages on the same day. Every score links to its page, every rule is printed, and a separate, unscored table covers citations, so the 25-point gap is not read as "worse for research".
In short
- The resultChatGPT 90, Perplexity 65 on seven documented-capability criteria, checked on 24 October 2026. The same rules score nine assistants on our ranking page.
- Where the gap comes fromChatGPT leads on the free plan (+12), entry price (+4), long documents (+2), training control (+3) and surfaces (+4). They tie on tools at about $20 and on add-ons.
- PricesChatGPT: Go $8, Plus $20, Pro from $100 a month. Perplexity: Pro $17 and Max $167 a month billed annually; Education Pro $10 a month after verification.
- ResearchNot scored. Perplexity documents inline citations on every answer and model choice on Pro; ChatGPT documents web search on every plan and deep research that is limited on Free.
- PrivacyBoth offer a training opt-out. Only ChatGPT documents a chat mode that is not used for training (Temporary chat).
- Not scoredAnswer quality, accuracy and intelligence. No official page measures them, so no rule can score them fairly.
Key numbers
Perplexity publishes no weekly-user figure on the pages we opened, and Pew's 2026 chart does not list Perplexity, so the usage numbers above describe ChatGPT only. Usage is context, not a score: none of the seven rules rewards popularity.
Perplexity vs ChatGPT side by side (24 October 2026)
Perplexity calls itself an answer engine built around real-time web search with inline citations; ChatGPT is a general assistant that also searches the web. The documented differences sit in the free plans, the entry prices, the training controls and how each one handles sources.
| Item | ChatGPT (OpenAI) | Perplexity (Perplexity AI, Inc.) |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | $0: search, limited uploads, limited image creation, limited deep research, plugins, limited ChatGPT Work on desktop [4] | $0 (Standard): basic searches with no practical cap, 3 Pro Searches a day, limited uploads; no image generation or file creation [12] |
| Cheapest paid | Go, $8 a month [3] | Pro, $17 a month billed annually [11] |
| About $20 | Plus, $20 a month [3][5] | Pro is the tier nearest $20 [11] |
| Top personal tier | Pro, from $100 a month [3] | Max, $167 a month billed annually [11] |
| Student price | Four free months of Plus for eligible US college students who claim by 31 October 2026 [5] | Education Pro, $10 a month with SheerID verification [12][13] |
| Citations | Search responses "may include citations" [8] | "Every answer includes inline citations" [11] |
| Model choice | OpenAI models, by plan [4] | Pro: "Select between AI models" from several companies [11] |
| Context window | Plus: 256K tokens for reasoning models [4] | No figure published [11][12] |
| Image generation | Free (limited) and paid plans [4] | Pro and above; not on Free [12] |
| Training control | Opt-out setting plus Temporary chat [6] | Opt-out setting [11] |
Prices are the US dollar list prices on the official pages, before tax. OpenAI's pricing page showed a local currency to our browser on 24 October 2026, so ChatGPT's US prices come from learn.chatgpt.com and OpenAI's help centre.
How we compared Perplexity and ChatGPT
Both products were scored on documented capability: seven criteria, each with one written rule applied the same way to both, using only official pages that open without signing in. These are the same seven rules and the same ratings as our ranking of nine assistants, so this page agrees with every other assistant comparison we publish.
Answer quality is left out because no vendor page measures it; the rules reward what you can check before you pay.
| Code | Criterion | Weight | The rule (the same for both) |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 | Free plan | 20 | Count five capabilities documented for the free plan: web search, file uploads, image generation, file creation (a .docx, .pptx, .xlsx or PDF, or export to Docs or Slides), connections to other apps. 5 = all five; 4 = four; 3 = three; 2 = two; 1 = 0–1. |
| A2 | Entry price | 10 | The cheapest paid tier per month; annual price ÷ 12 if annual billing is published. 5 = ≤ $10; 4 = $10.01–15; 3 = $15.01–20; 2 = $20.01–30; 1 = over $30. |
| A3 | Long documents | 10 | The largest context window published for the plan nearest $20 a month, on a consumer page that opens without signing in. 5 = 1M tokens or more; 3 = 128K to under 1M; 1 = under 128K; 2 = not published. |
| A4 | Tools on the ~$20 plan | 20 | Count six tools: web search, deep research, image generation, voice conversation (spoken back-and-forth, not dictation), file creation, video generation. 5 = 5–6; 4 = 4; 3 = 3; 2 = 2; 1 = 0–1. |
| A5 | Add-ons | 15 | 5 = custom MCP connectors on free and paid personal plans; 4 = paid personal plans only, or with age or region limits; 3 = an app or plugin directory for individuals, custom MCP only in business plans; 2 = built-in links to a few services; 1 = none. |
| A6 | Training control | 15 | 5 = consumer chats are not used for training; 4 = an opt-out setting plus a chat mode excluded from training; 3 = an opt-out setting only; 2 = opt-out by request or form; 1 = no opt-out stated. |
| A7 | Where it works | 10 | Count six surfaces: web, desktop app, mobile app, browser extension or own browser, office-suite add-in or integration, own coding agent. 5 = 6; 4 = 5; 3 = 4; 2 = 3; 1 = 2 or fewer. |
Two clarifications apply to both vendors. A capability counts for a plan when an official page lists it for that plan, or documents it for the product with no plan limit; a plan-specific statement beats a general one. And a context window must be published for the consumer plan; API model pages do not count, because they describe the developer product, not the subscription.
The scored table: ChatGPT 90, Perplexity 65
ChatGPT scores 90 and Perplexity 65 out of 100 on the seven rules, a 25-point gap. ChatGPT's lead comes mostly from its free plan (+12 points), with smaller leads on entry price, long documents, training control and surfaces. On the tools of a roughly $20 plan and on add-ons, the two are level.

| Criterion | ChatGPT: rating and reason | Perplexity: rating and reason | Lead |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 Free plan (20) | 5. Pricing table, Free: Search, limited file uploads, limited image generation, "Discover & use Plugins", ChatGPT Work "Limited (desktop app)", which creates documents, spreadsheets and presentations [4][19] | 2. Free: basic searches with no practical cap and "Basic file uploads (limited)"; "No access to … image generation"; file and app creation "No" [12] | ChatGPT +12 |
| A2 Entry price (10) | 5. Go at $8 a month [3] | 3. Pro at $17 a month or equivalent, billed annually [11] | ChatGPT +4 |
| A3 Long documents (10) | 3. Plus: "GPT Reasoning total context window" 256K, on the pricing page that now opens without signing in [4] | 2. No context window published on the Pro page or the plans article [11][12] | ChatGPT +2 |
| A4 Tools on ~$20 (20) | 5. Plus: search, expanded deep research, image creation, voice, ChatGPT Work for files. That is 5 of 6 [4] | 5. Pro: Pro Search, "Deep research", "Image and video generation", "Create files and apps". That is 5 of 6 [11][12][15] | Level |
| A5 Add-ons (15) | 4. Plugin directory on all plans; "Pro users can connect custom MCP servers with read/fetch permissions" [9][10] | 4. Personal custom plugins can declare remote MCP servers and need a plan that includes Perplexity Computer, such as Pro [11][14] | Level |
| A6 Training control (15) | 4. "Improve the model for everyone" setting; Temporary chats "are not used to improve OpenAI models" [6] | 3. "By default, searches may be used to improve our AI. You can opt out anytime in Account Settings." No training-free chat mode documented [11] | ChatGPT +3 |
| A7 Where it works (10) | 5. Web, desktop, mobile, ChatGPT with Chrome, ChatGPT for Excel, Codex. That is 6 [3] | 3. Web, Perplexity for Mac, iPhone, the Comet browser. That is 4 [16][17] | ChatGPT +4 |
The arithmetic, row by row
Each weighted score is the rating divided by 5, times the criterion's weight. The totals are the sums of the seven weighted scores.
| Criterion | ChatGPT | Perplexity | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 (20) | 5 ÷ 5 × 20 = 20 | 2 ÷ 5 × 20 = 8 | ChatGPT +12 |
| A2 (10) | 5 ÷ 5 × 10 = 10 | 3 ÷ 5 × 10 = 6 | ChatGPT +4 |
| A3 (10) | 3 ÷ 5 × 10 = 6 | 2 ÷ 5 × 10 = 4 | ChatGPT +2 |
| A4 (20) | 5 ÷ 5 × 20 = 20 | 5 ÷ 5 × 20 = 20 | 0 |
| A5 (15) | 4 ÷ 5 × 15 = 12 | 4 ÷ 5 × 15 = 12 | 0 |
| A6 (15) | 4 ÷ 5 × 15 = 12 | 3 ÷ 5 × 15 = 9 | ChatGPT +3 |
| A7 (10) | 5 ÷ 5 × 10 = 10 | 3 ÷ 5 × 10 = 6 | ChatGPT +4 |
| Total | 20 + 10 + 6 + 20 + 12 + 12 + 10 = 90 | 8 + 6 + 4 + 20 + 12 + 9 + 6 = 65 | 12 + 4 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 25 |
Why the gap is 25 points
Almost half the gap, 12 of the 25 points, is the free plan: ChatGPT's documents all five counted capabilities, Perplexity's documents two (search and limited uploads). The rest comes from a cheaper first paid tier ($8 against $17, +4), a published context window (+2), a chat mode excluded from training (+3) and two more surfaces (+4): ChatGPT documents six, adding an office add-in (ChatGPT for Excel) and its own coding agent (Codex) to the web, desktop, mobile and browser surfaces both have. Once you pay about $20, the tool lists match: both document five of the six counted tools, and Perplexity's include video generation where ChatGPT's include voice conversation.
What would change the result
- ChatGPT A3: the 256K figure is on OpenAI's pricing page, which opened without a sign-in on 24 October 2026 after redirecting to a login on 22 October. If it goes back behind a login, ChatGPT returns to 88.
- ChatGPT A1: file creation on Free rests on ChatGPT Work, listed as "Limited (desktop app)". Without that capability ChatGPT scores 86.
- Perplexity A5: the custom remote-connector article sits under Enterprise, while the personal custom-plugin article supports a 4. Read as Enterprise-only, Perplexity scores 62.
None of these alone moves the gap below 21 points. Scored with the same rules on the same day, Google Gemini totals 94 and Claude 85; our ranking of the best AI chatbots shows all nine assistants side by side.
What the rubric doesn't measure: research and citations
Rubric A was built to compare general assistants, so it does not score citations, the feature Perplexity is built around. Read the 90 to 65 result as "ChatGPT's plans document more general capability", not as "Perplexity is worse for research". The table below sets the documented research features side by side without scores.
| Research feature | ChatGPT | Perplexity |
|---|---|---|
| Sources on answers | "Responses that use web search may include citations"; select Sources to see them [8] | "Every answer includes numbered inline citations that link directly to original sources" [11] |
| Citations on paid plans | No plan difference documented on the pages we opened [4][8] | Pro: "10x as many citations per answer" [15] |
| Previewing a source | On desktop web, point to a citation to preview it [8] | Click a citation "to expand a snippet from the source" [11] |
| Web search, free | On Free, Go, Plus and Pro; also without signing in [8] | Basic searches with no practical cap; 3 Pro Searches a day [12] |
| Deep research, free | "Limited deep research" [4] | Research queries: 1 a month [12] |
| Deep research, paid | Plus: "Expanded deep research"; Pro: "Maximum deep research" [4] | Pro: "Deep research"; Max: "Expert level research" [11] |
| Choice of model | OpenAI models, by plan [4] | Pro: "Select between AI models"; Free: a single default model [11] |
| Study tools | Study mode "available across ChatGPT plans globally" [7] | Education Pro includes Learn Mode [13] |
| Reports and files | ChatGPT Work creates documents, spreadsheets and presentations [19] | Pro: "Create polished documents & apps" [11] |
If research is your main job, this table matters more than the score.
Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT? Which is better, by task
Perplexity is better than ChatGPT for documented source-first research: a citation on every answer and a choice of model on Pro. ChatGPT is better for the broadest free plan, images, the cheapest paid tier and a chat mode excluded from training. For several everyday jobs the honest answer is "either".
| If you need… | Choose | The documented reason |
|---|---|---|
| A source link on every answer | Perplexity | "Every answer includes inline citations from trusted sources" [11] |
| To pick whose model answers | Perplexity (Pro) | "Select between AI models" from several companies [11] |
| Images on a free plan | ChatGPT | Free: "Limited image creation"; Perplexity Free: "No access to … image generation" [4][12] |
| The cheapest paid plan | ChatGPT (Go, $8) | Perplexity's cheapest paid tier is Pro at $17 a month billed annually [3][11] |
| A student price | Perplexity (Education Pro, $10) | ChatGPT's four-free-months offer for US college students closes on 31 October 2026 [5][12] |
| A chat not used for training | ChatGPT | Temporary chats are not used to improve OpenAI models; Perplexity documents an opt-out only [6][11] |
| Long documents | ChatGPT | Plus publishes 256K tokens for reasoning models; Perplexity publishes no figure [4] |
| Documents, sheets, slides | Either, on paid plans | ChatGPT Work; Perplexity Pro "Create polished documents & apps" [11][19] |
| An AI browser | Either | Perplexity's Comet browser; ChatGPT lists a built-in browser and a Chrome extension [3][4][17] |
| An agent that does tasks | Either | Perplexity Computer (Pro: "Expanded Computer access"); ChatGPT Work [11][19] |
The one-line rule: use Perplexity when every answer needs a source you can click; use ChatGPT when you need images, files, voice and a free plan that does most things. Perplexity's own FAQ draws a similar line, describing itself as built for research and source verification and ChatGPT as a conversational chatbot [11]. Whichever you choose, open the source before you quote it.
Perplexity vs ChatGPT for research and academic work
For research, Perplexity documents a citation on every answer; ChatGPT documents citations on answers that use web search and adds deep research on every plan, limited on Free. Neither page claims the answers are always right, and OpenAI's help centre says plainly that citations "can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect" [8].
The research table above holds the documented differences: how sources appear, how much deep research each plan gets, and whether you can choose the model. What it cannot show is whether a given answer is right, which is why the checking routine below matters more than the choice of tool.
Perplexity vs ChatGPT for academic research and research papers
For academic research, treat both as finding aids, not as sources. A cited web page is a lead to the primary source; the journal article, dataset or official report, with its page number and date, is what goes into your reference list.
Two of our guides show the next step. A research proposal presentation needs every claim in the literature slide traced to a paper you have read, and a journal club presentation appraises one paper in depth, which no summary can replace.
How to check a citation in three steps
Checking a citation takes three steps: open the link, find the sentence that supports the claim, and check the date of the page. If any step fails, the claim is unsupported, whatever the answer's tone.
- Open the link. Does it load, and is it the publisher's own page rather than a copy or a summary? Pass: the original page opens. Fail: a dead link or an aggregator.
- Find the sentence. Search the page for the number or claim. Is it there, in the same meaning? Pass: the page states it. Fail: the number is missing, rounded differently or about something else.
- Check the date. When was the page published or updated, and is the figure still current? Pass: a dated page, recent enough for your use. Fail: no date, or an older figure since replaced.

Our guide to AI hallucinations explains why fluent answers can carry invented facts, and gives a fuller checking routine for reports and slides.
Perplexity vs ChatGPT for students and studying
For students, Perplexity offers a standing discount, Education Pro at $10 a month after SheerID verification, while ChatGPT offers study mode on every plan and, until 31 October 2026, four free months of Plus for eligible US college students [5][7][12].
| For students | ChatGPT | Perplexity |
|---|---|---|
| Discount | 2026 Back to School offer: four free monthly billing periods of Plus, then $20 a month unless cancelled; claim by 31 October 2026 [5] | Education Pro: $10 a month with SheerID verification [12] |
| Who qualifies | Full-time and part-time college and graduate students at eligible US degree-granting institutions [5] | Verified students and faculty at university-level institutions [11][13] |
| Learning mode | Study mode on every plan, on web, iOS and Android [7] | Learn Mode, included in Education Pro [13] |
| Free plan | Search, uploads, limited image creation and deep research [4] | Basic searches, 3 Pro Searches a day, 1 Research query a month [12] |
Study mode asks questions, explains in layers and works from notes or slides you upload [7]; Education Pro includes everything in Pro plus Learn Mode and education-specific tips [13]. For graded work, follow your school's AI-use policy.
On a $0 budget, use ChatGPT Free for study mode and Perplexity Free for quick sourced lookups, then pay for the one whose free limit you hit first.
Perplexity vs ChatGPT for coding and writing
For coding, ChatGPT includes OpenAI's Codex coding agent from the Free plan, while Perplexity documents app building through its Computer agent; for writing, ChatGPT documents more file and voice tools, and Perplexity documents sourced drafts and documents on Pro. Neither publishes a measure of code or writing quality.
OpenAI states that ChatGPT Work and Codex are included in every ChatGPT plan, from Free to Enterprise, and lists Codex on the web, in a command-line tool and in an IDE extension [3]. Perplexity Pro lists "Create polished documents & apps", and its Computer agent "creates personalized apps, tools, docs, and more" [11]. That is why ChatGPT gets one more surface on rule A7: an own coding agent.
For writing, ChatGPT Plus lists voice, image creation, projects and custom GPTs [4]; Perplexity Pro lists memory, uploads and document creation, with citations attached [11]. Give both the same brief and sources, and judge the drafts yourself.
Perplexity vs ChatGPT pricing: plans side by side
ChatGPT has four personal tiers, Free, Go at $8, Plus at $20 and Pro from $100 a month, all billed monthly. Perplexity has Free (Standard), Pro at $17 and Max at $167 a month billed annually, plus Education Pro at $10 a month for verified students and educators.
| Tier | ChatGPT | Perplexity | 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 (Standard) | $0 on both |
| Entry paid | Go, $8 a month | Pro, $17 a month billed annually | Go: 12 × $8 = $96; Pro: 12 × $17 = $204 |
| ~$20 personal | Plus, $20 a month | Pro (no tier at $20) | Plus: 12 × $20 = $240 |
| Students | Plus offer: 4 free months, then $20 | Education Pro, $10 a month | Education Pro: 12 × $10 = $120 |
| Heavy use | Pro, from $100 a month | Max, $167 a month billed annually | From $1,200 vs 12 × $167 = $2,004 |
| Business | Business, from $20 per user a month | Enterprise Pro, from $40 a seat a month or $400 a year | Per seat: from $240 vs from $400 on annual billing |
OpenAI's pricing FAQ says it offers monthly plans for Go, Plus and Business and annual plans for Business and Enterprise [4]. Perplexity's Pro page shows each price as "/month or equivalent, when billed annually" and no separate monthly price, and its plans article notes that Max annual billing is only available on perplexity.ai [11][12]. Both companies list higher tiers for heavy users: ChatGPT Pro offers three usage tiers from $100, and Perplexity Max adds the highest usage limits, early features and 10,000 monthly credits [3][4][11].
Perplexity Pro vs ChatGPT Plus
Perplexity Pro costs $17 a month billed annually ($204 a year); ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month ($240 a year). Pro adds model choice, more Pro Searches, deep research, image and video generation and file creation [11][12]. Plus adds advanced reasoning models, expanded deep research, image creation, voice, projects and ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile [4]. On rule A4 both document five of six tools; Plus publishes a context window of 256K tokens for reasoning models, and Pro publishes none.
Perplexity vs ChatGPT price outside the US
Prices differ by country, and OpenAI's pricing page showed our browser a local currency. Perplexity's plans article adds that a partner promotion or trial needs a valid payment method and renews at the standard rate unless cancelled [12]. Open each vendor's pricing page from your own country; we quote only the US prices we opened.
Worked example: paying for one, the other or both
For one analyst who pays for both at list price, swapping ChatGPT Plus for Go saves $144 a year, or 32.4%, and keeps a source link on every Perplexity answer. A verified student on the same team saves 41.2% on Perplexity with Education Pro.
| Option | Calculation | 12 months | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Today: Plus + Pro | 12 × $20 + 12 × $17 = $240 + $204 | $444 | — |
| A: Go + Pro | 12 × $8 + 12 × $17 = $96 + $204 | $300 | $144 (32.4%) |
| B: Pro only | 12 × $17, plus ChatGPT Free | $204 | $240 (54.1%) |
| Ana: Education Pro | 12 × $10, against Pro at $204 | $120 | $84 (41.2%) |
The arithmetic. Option A saves $444 − $300 = $144, and $144 ÷ $444 = 0.324, or 32.4%. Option B saves $444 − $204 = $240, and $240 ÷ $444 = 0.541, or 54.1%. Ana's Education Pro costs $204 − $120 = $84 less than Pro, and $84 ÷ $204 = 0.412, or 41.2%.
The trade-offs. Go keeps more image creation and uploads than Free but lists ChatGPT Work as "Limited (desktop app)" and may include ads, while Plus adds expanded deep research and Work on web and mobile [4]. Option B keeps ChatGPT Free, with its limited image creation and deep research, but drops every paid ChatGPT tool. For the full plan-by-plan comparison across vendors, see our guide to the best AI subscription.
The decision. Diego chooses Option A from 1 January 2027: his client reports need a source on every figure, which Perplexity documents, and he makes an occasional chart image, which Go covers. With Ana on Education Pro, the team pays $204 + $96 + $120 = $420 a year. He will review the choice on 1 June 2027 against both pricing pages.

Here are two slides from this article's worked example, as NOXI built them, unedited.

What is Perplexity AI, and does Perplexity use ChatGPT?
Perplexity is an AI answer engine from Perplexity AI, Inc., a San Francisco company, that searches the web in real time and answers with inline citations. It does not run on ChatGPT; on its paid plans it lets you choose between models from several companies, OpenAI among them, and on the free plan it picks the model for you.
Perplexity's Terms of Service, last updated 23 January 2026, name Perplexity AI, Inc. of San Francisco as the company behind the service [18].
Does Perplexity use ChatGPT?
No, not as a product: Perplexity uses large language models from several companies, and OpenAI's are among them. On 24 October 2026, Perplexity's Pro page listed models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, xAI, Moonshot AI and Z.ai (for example "GPT-6.1 Sol", "OpenAI's versatile model", as listed on perplexity.ai/pro), and its FAQ adds Perplexity's in-house Sonar model [11]. Pro subscribers can "switch between models with one click"; on Free, "We pick the best model to use for your query" [11][12]. ChatGPT, by contrast, runs OpenAI's own models, with the list depending on the plan [4].
What is Perplexity AI good for?
Perplexity is built for questions where you want the source next to the answer. Its Pro page shows examples such as competitor earnings, mortgage rates and market share, each answered with cited sources, and its Computer agent extends that to building apps and documents [11][16].
Browsers and agents: Comet and Perplexity Computer vs ChatGPT
Perplexity ships its own browser, Comet, and an agent, Perplexity Computer, which also runs on a Mac as Personal Computer, built into the Perplexity macOS app. On the OpenAI pages we opened, ChatGPT lists a built-in browser, a Chrome extension and ChatGPT Work for multi-step tasks and files.
Perplexity Comet vs ChatGPT's browser
Comet is "a new browser from Perplexity", available for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, with an assistant that can research, draft emails, build and shop on your behalf [17]. Its Comet Assistant queries are not included on Free and come with monthly limits on Pro [12]. Searchers often ask about "Comet vs ChatGPT Atlas"; on the OpenAI pages we opened on 24 October 2026, the browser features appear as "Built-in browser" in the plan table and as "Use ChatGPT with Chrome" and "Browser in ChatGPT Web" on learn.chatgpt.com [3][4].
Perplexity Computer vs ChatGPT's agent features
On a Mac, Personal Computer "creates teams of agents across 20+ frontier models", runs actions in an isolated sandbox, reads and writes files in folders you connect, operates Mac apps and takes tasks started from an iPhone [16]. Pro includes "Expanded Computer access" and Max "Maximum Computer usage" [11]. On ChatGPT, Work creates and edits documents, spreadsheets and presentations, limited to the desktop app on Free and Go and available on desktop, web and mobile on Plus [4][19]; Pro adds "Dot, your always-on agent" [4]. Both limit agent use by plan.
Privacy: does Perplexity train on my data?
By default, yes, unless you opt out: Perplexity's Pro page says "By default, searches may be used to improve our AI" and that you can opt out in Account Settings. ChatGPT also uses consumer chats for training by default with an opt-out, and adds Temporary chats that are not used to improve OpenAI models. That extra mode is worth 3 points to ChatGPT on rule A6.
| Control | ChatGPT | Perplexity |
|---|---|---|
| Default | Data sharing is on by default for Free, Plus and Pro [6] | "By default, searches may be used to improve our AI" [11] |
| Opt-out | Turn off "Improve the model for everyone"; new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models [6] | "You can opt out anytime in Account Settings" [11] |
| No-training chat | Temporary chat: not used to improve OpenAI models, kept up to 30 days for safety [6] | Not documented on the pages we opened [11][12] |
| Business plans | By default, content from Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces is not used to train OpenAI models [6] | Enterprise and API: "your data is never used for training" [11] |
Neither consumer setting makes an assistant a safe place for confidential client data; for work material, follow your employer's policy.
Perplexity vs ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini, Reddit and 2026
Scored on the same seven rules on 24 October 2026, Google Gemini totals 94, ChatGPT 90, Claude 85 and Perplexity 65. Perplexity's free plan, which documents two of the five counted capabilities, explains most of its distance from the other three.
Perplexity vs ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini
All four document web search and deep research on their plans nearest $20. Gemini publishes a context window of 1M tokens and Claude one of up to 1M for those plans, ChatGPT publishes 256K for reasoning models on Plus, and Perplexity publishes none. For the two-way questions, see ChatGPT vs Claude; for all nine assistants, see our chatbot ranking.
What the Perplexity vs ChatGPT Reddit threads argue about
The searches behind "Perplexity vs ChatGPT Reddit" come down to three questions: which gets facts right, which subscription is worth paying for, and whether Perplexity is "just ChatGPT with search". The last two have documented answers above; the first has none, which is why accuracy is not scored.
Perplexity vs ChatGPT in 2026
On 24 October 2026 the line-ups read: ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro, with study mode on every plan and a 256K-token reasoning window on Plus; Perplexity Free (Standard), Pro, Max and Education Pro, with Comet and Perplexity Computer [3][4][11][12]. We re-check this page monthly against the same seven rules.
If your goal is a presentation
If the job is a slide deck rather than an answer, the sources have to travel with the numbers onto the slides. Both assistants can create presentation files on paid plans; a dedicated presentation maker is a third route, and NOXI is our pick for turning a researched brief into a designed deck with sources on the figure slides.
Our guide to AI presentations with research citations shows how to keep each figure's source on the slide, and our ChatGPT for presentations comparison covers what a general assistant does with slides.
When you start from a prompt, NOXI researches the topic on the web first, and slides with figures carry a source line linking to where each number came from. You can review the outline before any slide is drawn, edit one slide or the whole deck by chat, and download an editable PowerPoint (.pptx) with real text boxes and embedded fonts, Arabic included, or a PDF, with no watermark. NOXI is free: each account gets a monthly allowance of 1,000 credits, and a full deck uses about 25.
Three prompts for a sourced deck
"Create a 9-slide deck for [team] deciding which research assistant to pay for in [year]. Compare [tool A] and [tool B] on citations, deep research, model choice, free plan, price per month and training controls, using each vendor's official pages. Every title is a full-sentence finding, every price has its billing period, and slides with figures carry their source."
"Research [topic] on the web and build an 8-slide briefing for [audience]: the question, three findings with one figure each and its source, what is still uncertain, and a recommendation with owner and date. Keep body text under 30 words per slide."
"Go through every slide with a number. Make sure each figure has a source line with the organisation and year, turn slide [number] into a table of [items] with units, and shorten every title to one line."
Build it: a sourced research deck in NOXI
To build a sourced deck, start from a prompt with Create from scratch: a prompt-started deck is researched on the web first, and its figure slides carry source lines you can check. One Home action, six steps:
Step 1 — Choose Create from scratch
Open noxi.ai, sign in to your free account and choose Create from scratch on Home. Paste Prompt 1 or Prompt 2 with your team, audience and date in place of the brackets.
Step 2 — Review the outline first
Choose to review the outline before any slide is drawn. Check that each title is a finding, that the price and score slides are in the plan, and edit the outline in plain words if anything is missing.
Step 3 — Generate and let the research run
Generate the deck and watch each slide being built. Because the deck starts from a prompt, NOXI researches the topic on the web first, and slides with figures carry a source line linking to where each number came from.
Step 4 — Check every source line in three steps
For each figure slide, open the source link, find the sentence that states the number, and check the page's date. Edit text on the slide, edit table cells and chart numbers, or ask the AI to correct a figure that fails a check.
Step 5 — Refine by chat
Paste Prompt 3 to run the source pass across the deck. Click any element and tell the AI what to change, or ask for an edit across all slides, and add your logo and brand colour.
Step 6 — Present, share or export
Present full-screen from NOXI, share a view-only link before the meeting, or download an editable PowerPoint (.pptx) with real text boxes and embedded fonts, or a PDF.
Perplexity vs ChatGPT: FAQ
- Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT?
- On documented capability, no: on seven printed rules checked on 24 October 2026, ChatGPT scores 90 and Perplexity 65, mainly because ChatGPT's free plan does more. For source-first research the answer turns: Perplexity documents inline citations on every answer, while OpenAI says ChatGPT search responses may include citations.
- Which is better for research, Perplexity or ChatGPT?
- Perplexity, if every answer needs a source you can click: its Pro page says every answer includes inline citations. ChatGPT also searches the web on every plan and offers deep research, limited on Free and expanded on Plus. Neither guarantees accuracy, so open each cited source before you rely on it.
- Is Perplexity free?
- Yes. Perplexity's free Standard plan offers basic searches with no practical cap, three Pro Searches a day, one Research query a month and limited file uploads. It has no image generation, no file creation and no model choice: Perplexity picks the model for you. Pro adds those from $17 a month billed annually.
- How much do Perplexity Pro and ChatGPT Plus cost?
- Perplexity Pro costs $17 a month billed annually, which is $204 a year; its public pages show no separate monthly price. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month, $240 a year, billed monthly. ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month, and Perplexity Max costs $167 a month billed annually, as listed on 24 October 2026.
- Does Perplexity use ChatGPT?
- Not as a product. Perplexity uses models from several companies, OpenAI among them: on 24 October 2026 its Pro page listed models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, xAI, Moonshot AI and Z.ai, and Pro subscribers can switch between them. On the free plan Perplexity picks the model for each query.
- Is there a student discount for Perplexity?
- Yes. Education Pro costs $10 a month for verified students and educators at university-level institutions, with verification through SheerID, and includes everything in Pro plus Learn Mode. OpenAI's 2026 Back to School offer gives eligible US college students four free months of ChatGPT Plus if claimed by 31 October 2026.
- Which one cites its sources?
- Both can, in different ways. Perplexity says every answer includes numbered inline citations that link to the original sources. OpenAI says ChatGPT responses that use web search may include citations, shown in a Sources panel. OpenAI also warns that citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, so check each one yourself.
- Does Perplexity train on my searches?
- By default, it may, unless you opt out: Perplexity's Pro page says searches may be used to improve its AI and that you can opt out anytime in Account Settings. Enterprise and API data is never used for training. ChatGPT also has an opt-out, plus Temporary chats that are not used to improve OpenAI's models.
- Can I use Perplexity and ChatGPT together?
- Yes. A common split is Perplexity for sourced answers you can click through and ChatGPT for images, files and voice. Paying for both at list price costs $444 a year with ChatGPT Plus and Perplexity Pro on annual billing, or $300 with ChatGPT Go instead of Plus, a saving of 32.4%.
- Can either make a presentation with sources?
- ChatGPT Work creates and edits presentations, and Perplexity's plans article says its Create files and apps feature builds presentations, spreadsheets and dashboards, with higher limits on Max. Check every figure's source yourself either way. A presentation maker such as NOXI researches a prompt-started deck on the web first and puts a source line on figure slides.

How this comparison was made: every price, plan feature, limit and setting comes from OpenAI's and Perplexity's own pages, opened on 24 October 2026 without signing in, in a browser where the page renders by script; optional cookies were declined. Scores copy our shared rubric A table for nine assistants, with every cell re-read on 24 October 2026 except where a source line says otherwise. They are documented capability, not a hands-on test.
