Disclosure: NOXI publishes this page. NOXI is a document and deck maker, not an assistant, so it is not one of the two contenders and is not ranked here. It appears once, after the verdict, as a reference row on the document rules, scored on the same rules as Claude and Copilot in Word. That is why the rules, the weights and the source of every cell are printed.
Claude vs Copilot: on seven assistant rules read 4 November 2026, Claude scores 85 and Microsoft Copilot 77. Copilot starts cheaper (Microsoft 365 Personal, "$9.99/month") and keeps app chats out of foundation-model training. Claude's free plan lists file creation and a custom connector, and Pro publishes a 1M context window. Document rules: Claude 88, Copilot in Word 80.
Two dated changes make this the month to compare them. Anthropic opened Claude Duet as a research preview on 21 October 2026, by waitlist and starting with US subscribers [10][11]. A week later Microsoft's Learn pages began to say that "Microsoft 365 Copilot is now named Microsoft Copilot" (page date 28 October 2026), so two different Microsoft products now share one name [15]. Microsoft Ignite, 17 to 20 November 2026, is the next likely trigger [30]. Everything below comes from the two vendors' own pages, opened logged out on 4 November 2026, on the same seven rules as our ChatGPT vs Copilot and ChatGPT vs Claude pages.
Claude vs Copilot at a glance (2026)
Claude leads Microsoft Copilot by 8 points on the assistant rules, 85 to 77, and leads Copilot in Word by 8 on the document rules, 88 to 80: the same order on both rubrics, for different reasons.
| Product | Assistant rules (A) | Document rules (D) | Why, in one line | Free and entry price, as served | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude (Anthropic) | 85 | 88 | Four of five free capabilities, custom connectors on every plan, a published 1M context window on Pro | Free "$0" · Pro "$17" a month billed annually, "$20" monthly; a bare dollar sign, no currency code | claude.com/pricing, support.claude.com · opened 4 November 2026, 10:30 to 10:34 UTC, re-read 11:31 UTC [1][2][3] |
| Microsoft Copilot (the updated Copilot app, with Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium or Pro) | 77 | 80 (Copilot in Word) | Cheapest paid entry, five of six tools on Premium, app chats kept out of foundation-model training | Copilot app free · Microsoft 365 Personal "$9.99/month" or "$99.99/year", US dollars on the en-us page | microsoft.com compare page, support.microsoft.com, learn.microsoft.com · opened 4 November 2026, 10:34 to 10:47 UTC, re-read 11:36 to 11:47 UTC [16][17][21] |
The work licence Microsoft used to sell as Microsoft 365 Copilot now shares the name. It is scored nowhere here and appears only where Microsoft gates a feature to it.
Who should pick what
The 8-point gap matters less than two questions: who pays for Microsoft 365 in your life, and where the file has to live. Each line rests on one documented fact.
- If you want file creation and a custom connector on a free plan, pick Claude. Its Free card reads "Search the web, create files, and run code", and a free account can add one custom connector by its MCP address [1][2].
- If you want the cheapest paid plan with the Office apps, pick Microsoft 365 Personal, printed at "$9.99/month" with the Word, Excel and PowerPoint desktop apps and Copilot [17].
- If your chats must stay out of model training by default, pick Copilot. Microsoft says Copilot app prompts, responses and files "aren't used to train foundation models"; Claude's control is an opt-out [21][1].
- If you live in Excel on a work account, ask for Copilot in Excel. It "supports Claude models from Anthropic" for editing workbooks, once an enterprise admin enables Anthropic as a Microsoft sub-processor [25].
- If you want Claude itself inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint, pick Claude Pro. Anthropic's add-ins are "generally available to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans" [9].
- If the deliverable is a designed deck, add NOXI to Claude as a custom connector: with the address on noxi.ai/connect, the connector creates a designed presentation from a topic, a brief or an outline, with optional fresh web research [39].
Key numbers
The scores are this page's arithmetic on printed rules: documented capability, not answer quality.
Claude vs Microsoft Copilot: which Copilot, after the 28 October rename
Microsoft now uses one name, Microsoft Copilot, for two products: the consumer Copilot app, and the work licence that was called Microsoft 365 Copilot until Microsoft's Learn pages renamed it (page date 28 October 2026).

| Name on Microsoft's pages | What it is on 4 November 2026 | Where this page uses it |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Copilot (consumer) | The updated Copilot app on web, desktop and mobile, available since 18 August 2026 [16][21] | The rubric A row, with Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium or Pro |
| Microsoft Copilot (work), formerly Microsoft 365 Copilot | The work licence; Learn's table heads its column "Microsoft Copilot (formerly Microsoft 365 Copilot)", while the price page still sells "Microsoft 365 Copilot (add-on)" [15][29] | Only where Microsoft gates a feature to it |
| Microsoft Copilot Chat, formerly Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat | The chat for work and school accounts, renamed in the same note [15] | One borderline free-plan example |
| Copilot in Word, Excel and PowerPoint | Copilot inside the Office apps, with "an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription and/or Microsoft 365 Copilot license" [23] | The rubric D row (Word) and the Office section |
| GitHub Copilot | A coding assistant, documented in agent mode inside Visual Studio [32] | The surfaces rule only, plus one short section |
| Copilot Pro | Not a current plan: its store address now opens the Microsoft 365 Premium page [31] | Nowhere, and no price |
So the first job of any Claude vs Microsoft Copilot answer is to say which Copilot. Here, "Copilot" alone means the consumer app plus the Copilot in the Microsoft 365 plans a person can buy, and the work licence is always written with its former name. Microsoft's price pages lag the rename: the compare page still has a row headed "Microsoft 365 Copilot (AI for account holder only)" [17]. We date the rename by the requirements and Copilot Chat management pages, both dated 28 October 2026; the same note also sits on a Learn privacy page dated 18 August 2026, so we claim no launch day [15].
How we scored Claude and Copilot
Both are scored on documented capability from their own vendors' pages, opened logged out on 4 November 2026, on the seven rules we apply to every assistant, so a cell can only be filled by a sentence on an official page.
| Code | Criterion | Weight | Full marks, and the lower levels |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 | Free plan | 20 | Five capabilities on the free plan: web search, uploads, image generation, file creation, app connections. 5 = all five · 4 = four · 3 = three · 2 = two · 1 = one or none. |
| A2 | Entry price | 10 | Cheapest paid tier a month, annual price divided by 12: 5 = up to $10 · 4 = $10.01 to 15 · 3 = $15.01 to 20 · 2 = $20.01 to 30 · 1 = above. |
| A3 | Long documents | 10 | Context window published for the plan nearest $20 on a consumer page: 5 = 1M tokens or more · 3 = 128K to under 1M · 2 = not published · 1 = under 128K. |
| A4 | Tools on the plan nearest $20 | 20 | Web search, deep research, image generation, voice, file creation, video generation. 5 = five or six · 4 = four · 3 = three · 2 = two · 1 = one or none. |
| A5 | Add-ons for individuals | 15 | 5 = custom MCP connectors on free and paid personal plans · 4 = paid personal plans only · 3 = a vendor directory only · 2 = links to a few named services · 1 = none. |
| A6 | Training control | 15 | 5 = consumer chats stated not to train the models · 4 = an opt-out plus a mode excluded from training · 3 = an opt-out only · 2 = by request · 1 = none. |
| A7 | Where it works | 10 | Web, desktop app, mobile app, a browser extension or own browser, an office-suite integration, own coding agent. 5 = six · 4 = five · 3 = four · 2 = three · 1 = fewer. |
Half marks and ties. Each rule is rated 1 to 5 and converted at rating divided by 5, times the weight, so a 4 on a 20-point rule is 16 points; there is no other partial credit. The tie chain is A1, then A4, then A6, and no tie arises at 85 and 77. The heaviest rules are A1 and A4, 20 points each.
How the pages were read. Anthropic's pages by a plain logged-out request, every Microsoft page in headless Chrome with a fresh profile, and Microsoft's transparency note, which refused a first request, in a real browser window. First read between 10:30 and 10:48 UTC, re-read cell by cell between 11:30 and 11:54 UTC; no cell moved. Anthropic's page prints a bare dollar sign with no currency code, and Microsoft's en-us pages served US dollars to a machine in the UAE.
What changed recently
Five dated movements on the vendors' pages since 21 October, with the page's date and our read time.
| Date on the vendor's page | What moved | Source | Read on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 November 2026 (page update date) | Copilot leaves Samsung and LG TVs "on December 1, 2026"; sign in to the updated app "by December 31, 2026" to keep eligible chats | support.microsoft.com, changes to the Copilot app [16] | 4 November 2026, 11:36 UTC |
| 31 October 2026 (modified date) | Anthropic's Claude for Word page updated; its plan line still reads Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise | claude.com/docs/office-agents/word [9] | 4 November 2026, 11:31 UTC |
| 28 October 2026 (page date) | "Microsoft 365 Copilot is now named Microsoft Copilot", and Copilot Chat loses the 365 in the same note | learn.microsoft.com, requirements and Copilot Chat management pages [15] | 4 November 2026, 11:36 UTC |
| 27 October 2026 | Release notes for 13 to 27 October 2026: admins can create custom MCP connectors; a Canva connector in Researcher (work tenants) | learn.microsoft.com, Copilot release notes [28] | 4 November 2026, 11:38 UTC |
| 21 October 2026 | Claude Duet research preview, by waitlist, "starting with US Pro, Max, and Ultra subscribers" | support.claude.com release notes and claude.com [10][11] | 4 November 2026, 11:31 UTC |
One change carries no date. Anthropic's help centre now says "The Max 20x plan is now called the Ultra plan", at $200 a month, and prints no day for the rename [12].
Copilot vs Claude on the seven assistant rules
Claude scores 85 and Microsoft Copilot 77, and the 8-point gap is three Claude wins worth 19 points (free plan, long documents, add-ons) minus three Copilot wins worth 11 (entry price, tools on the paid plan, training control).

The arithmetic. Claude rates 4, 3, 5, 4, 5, 4, 5 on A1 to A7: 16 + 6 + 10 + 16 + 15 + 12 + 10 = 85. Microsoft Copilot rates 3, 5, 2, 5, 2, 5, 5: 12 + 10 + 4 + 20 + 6 + 15 + 10 = 77. The gap of 8 is A1 plus 4, A3 plus 6 and A5 plus 9, minus A2 4, A4 4 and A6 3; A7 is level.
| Criterion | Claude | Microsoft Copilot | Lead | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A1 Free plan (20) | 4 Web search, uploads, file creation and one custom connector; "Claude doesn't generate photos or illustrations", so four of five | 3 Chat, images and uploads "for free"; connectors are scoped to paid personal plans and no free file creation is documented, so three of five | Claude +4 | claude.com/pricing, support.claude.com; support.microsoft.com app changes and connectors pages · 4 Nov 2026 [1][2][5][16][20] |
| A2 Entry price (10) | 3 Pro at "$17" a month on annual billing ($200 ÷ 12 = $16.67): the $15.01 to 20 band | 5 Microsoft 365 Personal at "$9.99/month" | Copilot +4 | claude.com/pricing; microsoft.com compare page · 4 Nov 2026 [1][17] |
| A3 Long documents (10) | 5 Pro context window "Up to 1M" | 2 No consumer context window on any page read, the transparency note included: the "not published" level | Claude +6 | claude.com/pricing, support.claude.com; Copilot transparency note · 4 Nov 2026 [1][4][22] |
| A4 Tools on the plan nearest $20 (20) | 4 Web search, Research, voice mode, file creation; no image or video generation, so four of six | 5 Premium ($19.99) lists Researcher, voice, image creation and Cowork file creation; "Create a video" is "No" for personal plans | Copilot +4 | claude.com/pricing, support.claude.com; Microsoft AI limits, Create and Cowork pages · 4 Nov 2026 [1][14][19][34][36] |
| A5 Add-ons for individuals (15) | 5 "Custom connectors using remote MCP" on every plan, Free included | 2 Links to four named services on paid personal plans; custom MCP connectors are for admins in work tenants | Claude +9 | support.claude.com; Microsoft connectors page and release notes · 4 Nov 2026 [2][20][28] |
| A6 Training control (15) | 4 Model training "Opt-out", plus Incognito chats that "are not used for training" | 5 App prompts, responses and files "aren't used to train foundation models" | Copilot +3 | claude.com/pricing, support.claude.com; Microsoft activity history page · 4 Nov 2026 [1][6][21] |
| A7 Where it works (10) | 5 Web, desktop, mobile, Claude in Chrome, Claude for Microsoft 365, Claude Code | 5 Copilot.com and mobile, the desktop app, Edge, the Office apps, GitHub Copilot agent mode | Level | claude.com/pricing; Microsoft connectors, Cowork and Edge pages, Visual Studio page · 4 Nov 2026 [1][20][32][34] |
| Total | 85 | 77 | Claude +8 | This page's arithmetic |
One cell sits on a borderline. Microsoft's article on creating content with Copilot Chat says it applies to free Copilot Chat and shows a prompt ending "put it in Word document", but its steps sign in with a work or school account, so we do not count it for a personal user. If you do, Copilot's A1 is 4, its total 81 and the gap 4 [27].
Claude vs Copilot, which is better: rule by rule
Claude is better by 8 points out of 100 on these rules, and only one single cell would reverse the order: custom MCP connectors on Microsoft's personal plans would lift Copilot's add-on rule from 2 to 5 and put Copilot first on 86.
Where Claude gains 19 points: add-ons, long documents, the free plan
A5 is the largest single cell on the page, 9 points. A free Claude account can add one custom connector by its remote MCP address, the same route the paid plans use [2]. Copilot's personal connectors link four named services on Personal, Family, Premium and Pro, and Microsoft's 27 October release notes describe custom MCP connectors as something admins create [20][28]. A3 is 6 points because Anthropic prints "Up to 1M" for Pro and Microsoft prints no consumer context window anywhere we read [1][22]. That is a documentation gap, not a measurement: the day Microsoft publishes a figure, this cell moves. A1 is 4 points: Claude's file creation is open to every plan, Free included, while Microsoft documents its file tools for personal accounts only on paid plans [3][36].
Where Copilot gains 11 points: price, paid tools, training
A2 is 4 points: $9.99 a month against $17. A4 is 4 points: on Microsoft 365 Premium, the plan nearest $20, the limits table lists Researcher, voice, image creation and Cowork, which creates Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files, while Claude Pro has no image generation and Anthropic says Claude Motion "doesn't use a video generation model" [19][34][14]. A6 is 3 points: Microsoft's no-training statement is the rule's top level, and Claude's opt-out plus Incognito chats sit one level below [21][1][6]. Two conditions apply on Copilot's side: Cowork for personal accounts is a preview "Currently only available in the US and Canada.", and the old consumer Deep Research retired on 18 August 2026, replaced on Premium and Pro by Researcher [19][16][33].
Sensitivity readings, all printed
- Equal weights, each rule read as a fraction of its maximum: Claude 0.857, Copilot 0.771. The gap holds at about 9 points on a 100 scale.
- Without A1, one of the two heaviest rules: Claude 69, Copilot 65 of the remaining 80 points.
- Without A4, the other one: Claude 69, Copilot 57. Copilot's tools on the paid plan are what keep it close.
- Single cells: Copilot A5 from 2 to 5 gives Copilot 86 against 85, first. Copilot A3 from 2 to 5 gives 83, still second. Copilot A1 from 3 to 4, the borderline example above, gives 81.
Only one reading reverses the order, and it needs Microsoft to change a page, which is why it is the second trigger at the end. For the same seven rules against Google's assistant, see Copilot vs Gemini.
Training and data, beyond the score
Microsoft also says connected-service data does not train Copilot, and its privacy controls page adds that chats may personalise Bing, Edge, MSN and ads unless you switch that off: not training, so not scored [20][37]. Read both vendors' pages before you paste a client's figures into either.
Claude vs Copilot in Excel, Word and PowerPoint
The two products meet inside Office from both sides: Microsoft lets eligible subscribers choose Claude models inside Copilot in Word and Excel, and Anthropic sells its own Claude add-ins for Word, Excel and PowerPoint on Pro and above.
Most comparisons of this pair miss that. In the UAE, Google's first suggestion after "claude vs copilot" on 4 November 2026 was "for excel", and the answer starts with which direction you mean.

| Direction · app | What the vendor documents | What it needs, in the vendor's words | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude inside Copilot · Word | Model choice in Copilot in Word: "you can choose from models such as Claude Sonnet or Claude Opus" | "Custom model selection is available with eligible premium subscriptions." | support.microsoft.com Word draft page · 4 November 2026 [23] |
| Claude inside Copilot · Excel | "Copilot in Excel supports Claude models from Anthropic and GPT models from OpenAI" for editing workbooks, with Auto as an option | The switcher needs "a commercial Microsoft Copilot subscription or a Microsoft 365 Premium subscription"; at work, an admin "must enable Anthropic as a Microsoft sub-processor" | support.microsoft.com Excel FAQ · 4 November 2026 [25] |
| Claude inside Copilot · PowerPoint | A model selector, or Auto; Claude is not named on that page | The page says Copilot "might not be included with your Microsoft 365 subscription" | support.microsoft.com PowerPoint create page · 4 November 2026 [35] |
| Claude inside Copilot · Researcher | "Researcher now supports Anthropic's AI models." | Researcher is on Premium, Pro or the work add-on, and an admin must allow access to Anthropic models | support.microsoft.com Researcher page · 4 November 2026 [33] |
| Anthropic's add-in · Word | "Select a passage and tell Claude what to change", tracked changes, and answers with clickable section citations | "generally available to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans"; pricing shows Claude for Microsoft 365 as "No" on Free | claude.com/docs/office-agents/word, claude.com/pricing · 4 November 2026 [9][1] |
| Anthropic's add-in · Excel and PowerPoint | Build models without leaving Excel; new slides in an existing template | The same plan sentence | claude.com/docs/office-agents · 4 November 2026 [9] |
Copilot's own side of Office. Copilot in Word drafts, adds citations, edits in place and generates images on an eligible subscription [23][24]. Copilot in Excel needs one of four things: Personal or Family with an AI credits plan, Premium, a commercial Copilot subscription, or an eligible business plan [25]. PowerPoint outline generation reads "Higher than free" on Personal and Family and "Extensive" on Premium [17].
So for Excel there are two ways to get Claude. On a work licence, ask your admin whether Anthropic is enabled; Copilot in Excel then runs Claude models inside Microsoft's product, on Microsoft's bill. On a personal Claude Pro plan, install Claude for Excel, Anthropic's product on Anthropic's bill, with no Copilot needed. One detail disagrees between Anthropic's own pages: the pricing table marks Claude for Microsoft 365 as included on Pro, Max and Ultra, while the add-in pages list Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise and do not mention Ultra [1][9]. For what Claude does with slides on its own, see our page on Claude for presentations.
Documents: the second rubric, re-applied
On the document rules Claude scores 88 and Copilot in Word 80, and the whole 8-point gap is one rule: Claude's free plan makes a Word file, while Copilot in Word needs a paid subscription.
We re-applied the rules of our best AI document generator ranking on 4 November 2026, cell for cell: D1 a Word file you can download 20, D2 works inside Word or Google Docs 10, D3 designed pages 15, D4 sources inside the document 15, D5 edit one part by asking 10, D6 the free plan makes a document 20, D7 right to left 10. A middle level is half the weight, except on D3 and D4, where it is 8 as printed. The tie chain is D1, then D6, then D4, then D3, then table order. PDF is not scored, because every row makes one.
| Row | D1 | D2 | D3 | D4 | D5 | D6 | D7 | Total | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude | 20 | 10 | 15 | 8, citations in the chat answer, not in the file | 10 | 20 | 5, several languages, no right-to-left statement | 88 | support.claude.com 12111783 and 16923645, claude.com/docs/office-agents/word · 4 November 2026 [3][7][8][9] |
| Copilot in Word | 20 | 10 | 15 | 15 | 10 | 0, paid subscription only | 10 | 80 | support.microsoft.com Word draft and images pages, right-to-left page · 4 November 2026 [23][24][26] |
| ref · NOXI, a document and deck maker you can use inside Claude through its connector, scored on the same document rules | 20 | 0, NOXI works in its own editor and hands you the Word file | 15 | 15 | 10 | 20 | 10 | 90 | the NOXI 2.0 launch article, noxi.ai/connect · 4 November 2026 [38][39] |
The arithmetic. Claude 20 + 10 + 15 + 8 + 10 + 20 + 5 = 88. Copilot in Word 20 + 10 + 15 + 15 + 10 + 0 + 10 = 80. The gap is D6 plus 20 for Claude, minus D4 7 and D7 5. The reference row is 20 + 0 + 15 + 15 + 10 + 20 + 10 = 90.
- Claude, 88. File creation, Word documents included, is open to every plan, and Claude Docs exports to Word and can add "a chart, diagram, graph, or timeline" [3][7]. D4 is 8 because Anthropic documents citations in the chat answer and no Anthropic page puts them inside the file [8]. D7 is 5: several languages in generated files, with no Arabic or right-to-left statement [3].
- Copilot in Word, 80. Full marks on six rules: it drafts inside Word, adds citations, edits in place, generates images and works with Office's right-to-left support [23][24][26]. Its 0 on D6 is the plan line quoted in the table above [23].
- The reference row, 90. NOXI 2.0 makes 14 formats from one request: presentation, document, brochure, social post, poster, one-pager, report, proposal, résumé, infographic, letter, invitation, certificate and menu, or Auto to let NOXI choose. Its Document format exports to Word with NOXI's own engine and places photos, illustrations and charts on the page. When the subject needs current facts, NOXI searches the live web first, and every fact keeps its source on the page. It edits by chat, changing only what you asked, and lays out right-to-left pages with mirrored layouts. Free to start: the free plan covers five documents a month, and every change after that, by chat or by hand, is free. D2 is 0 because NOXI works in its own editor and hands you the Word file [38].
Read the reference row for what it is: a document maker scored on rules written for documents. It says nothing about either assistant and is not a winner here. On the full eleven-row table of the document ranking, Google Gemini also scores 90 and Claude is third at 88 [40].
Sensitivity readings on the document rules
- Equal weights: Claude 0.862, Copilot in Word 0.857. Claude stays ahead; the reference row reads 0.857.
- Without D6, a heaviest rule: Copilot in Word 80, Claude 68. Copilot in Word moves ahead; the reference row reads 70.
- Without D1, the other heaviest rule: Claude 68, Copilot in Word 60. Claude stays ahead; the reference row reads 70.
- Single cells: Copilot in Word D6 from 0 to 20 gives 100, first. Claude D4 from 8 to 15 gives 95; Claude D7 from 5 to 10 gives 93.
Claude vs Copilot pricing, with currencies and dates
Copilot starts cheaper, $9.99 a month with Microsoft 365 Personal against $17 a month for Claude Pro on annual billing, and at the twenty-dollar step the two annual prices are one cent apart: $199.99 for Microsoft 365 Premium, $200 for a year of Claude Pro.

| Step | Claude, claude.com/pricing (a bare "$") | Microsoft, en-us pages (US dollars) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | "$0", "Free for everyone" [1] | The Copilot app, "subject to available capacity and limits"; Microsoft 365 Basic has no AI features [16][17] |
| Entry | Pro "$17" a month with annual billing ("$200 billed up front"), or "$20 if billed monthly" [1] | Microsoft 365 Personal "$9.99/month" or "$99.99/year"; Family "$12.99/month" or "$129.99/year", AI for the owner only [17] |
| About $20 | Pro, as above | Microsoft 365 Premium "$19.99/month" or "$199.99/year" [17] |
| Above that | Max "$100" and Ultra "$200" per month; Ultra is the former Max 20x plan [1][12] | Microsoft 365 Pro "$99.99" a month, "Monthly billing only" [18] |
| Work | Team and Enterprise, not scored here | Microsoft Copilot (formerly Microsoft 365 Copilot), sold as "Microsoft 365 Copilot (add-on)" at "$30.00" user/month, paid yearly; the Business add-on "now starting from $18.00" [29] |
| No longer sold | Nothing | Copilot Pro: its store address opens the Microsoft 365 Premium page [31] |
Monthly against annual, on the vendors' own figures. Claude Pro billed monthly is 12 × $20 = $240, against $200 billed annually: $40 more, 20% above the annual price. Microsoft 365 Personal monthly is 12 × $9.99 = $119.88 against $99.99, so $19.89 more; Premium is 12 × $19.99 = $239.88 against $199.99, so $39.89 more. Microsoft prints both of those savings itself on the compare page [17].
On currency. This page was read from a machine in the UAE. Microsoft's en-us pages still served US dollars and marked Microsoft 365 Pro "not available in your market" [18]; Anthropic's page printed a bare dollar sign [1]. Outside the United States, open both pages in your own country before you buy. For the AI companies actually built here, see our top AI companies in the UAE.
Claude Duet, and what it is not yet
Claude Duet is a research preview, not a plan feature: Anthropic opened it on 21 October 2026 by waitlist, starting with US subscribers, so it scores on no rule here.
Anthropic describes it as "a new app where Claude works as a proactive agent", on iOS, Android and claude.ai, living in its own app, separate from the main Claude app [10][11]. Two Anthropic pages describe access differently: the release notes name Pro and Max plans, and the launch article says "available by waitlist today, starting with US Pro, Max, and Ultra subscribers" [10][11]. We print the article's wording. A safety note on the same page is dated 23 October 2026 [11].
What Duet is not yet: on the free plan, outside the US, or generally available, which is what a research preview means. If it ships widely, the free-plan and surfaces rules would be re-read: the third trigger below.
For coding: GitHub Copilot is a different product
Much of what ranks for this pair compares Claude Code with GitHub Copilot, a different contest. GitHub Copilot is Microsoft's coding assistant, documented in agent mode inside Visual Studio, and here it counts only as the coding-agent surface in A7 [32]. Claude Code is marked "Yes" on Pro [1]. Neither is scored on code quality, because no official page documents it comparably. A coding decision needs your own repository and a week of real tasks, not a plan table.
Worked example: one analyst, one employer, two assistants
For a fictional analyst whose employer pays for Microsoft 365, the answer is not a switch: the work licence covers Excel, with Claude models if IT enables Anthropic, and her personal Claude Pro stays for long documents and connectors, at $200 a year.
Step one, Excel at work. Her licence is Microsoft Copilot (formerly Microsoft 365 Copilot). Copilot in Excel supports Claude models, but for enterprise customers an admin must first enable Anthropic as a Microsoft sub-processor [25]. So she asks IT one question. Claude for Excel, the Anthropic add-in, is in her Pro plan, but installing it on a work laptop is IT's call [9].
Step two, the long reading at home. She reads a 300-page annual report and two analyst notes in one sitting. Anthropic publishes "Up to 1M" tokens on Pro and Microsoft publishes no consumer figure, so on documentation alone Claude is the one she can plan around [1][22].
Step three, the free Word file. Her partner, who pays for nothing, needs a two-page Word document for a housing association. Claude's free plan can create a .docx; Copilot in Word needs a paid subscription [3][23].
| Option for twelve months | Calculation | Twelve months |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro, annual billing | $200 billed up front; $200 ÷ 12 = $16.67 a month | $200.00 |
| Claude Pro, monthly billing | 12 × $20 | $240.00 |
| Microsoft 365 Premium, annual | As printed on the compare page | $199.99 |
| Microsoft 365 Personal, annual | As printed on the compare page | $99.99 |
| Claude Pro and Microsoft 365 Personal, both annual | $200.00 + $99.99 | $299.99 |
The arithmetic, checked twice. Microsoft 365 Premium costs $200.00 minus $199.99 = $0.01 less a year than Claude Pro. Paying Claude monthly adds $240.00 minus $200.00 = $40.00, 20% on top of the annual price. Adding Personal to Claude Pro makes $299.99 and buys nothing she lacks, because her employer already pays for Office.
Decision. Keep Claude Pro on annual billing at $200.00: it wins the assistant rules 85 to 77 and covers the long reading and the connectors she uses at home. Skip Microsoft 365 Premium, because what it would add for her, Claude models inside Copilot in Excel, is a question for IT on the licence she already has. Her partner uses Claude's free plan. She builds the quarterly board deck with NOXI through the Claude connector. Review on 21 November 2026, after Ignite.
What these rules don't measure
Seven rules leave out most of what people argue about, and several of the gaps favour Copilot, the product that scores lower.
- Answer quality, accuracy, reasoning and coding benchmarks. Both vendors publish claims about their own models. We score no benchmark in either direction.
- Grounding in your organisation's own files and mail. That is the main case for the work licence, and Microsoft says chat experiences in Word, Excel and PowerPoint "vary depending on the user's license and tenant configuration" [15]. These consumer rules do not reach it.
- Administration, compliance, data residency and regional availability. Any of them can decide a company purchase, and none is a consumer rule.
- Usage limits. Claude Free shows limited usage every five hours and every week, and the Copilot app is free "subject to available capacity and limits". Neither publishes a number we could score [1][16].
- Interface languages. Claude's interface comes in eleven languages without Arabic, while Copilot accepts Arabic prompts on personal accounts [13][26]. Only the document rules touch language.
- Claude Code against GitHub Copilot. Covered in one short section above, and scored on nothing but the surfaces rule.
What would change this ranking
Three things would move the numbers, each checkable on a named page.
- 1. Microsoft Ignite, 17 to 20 November 2026, changes consumer Copilot plans, names, connectors or model choice. Pages: microsoft.com compare-all-microsoft-365-products and the learn.microsoft.com requirements page. We re-check on 21 November 2026.
- 2. Microsoft publishes a consumer context window, or opens custom MCP connectors to personal plans. Copilot's A3 is 2 because nothing is published; A5 at 5 would put Copilot first on 86. Pages: the Copilot transparency note and the connectors article. We re-check on 1 December 2026.
- 3. Claude Duet opens beyond the US waitlist or reaches Free. It scores on no rule today, as a research preview; A1 and A7 would be re-read if it ships widely. Page: support.claude.com release notes. We re-check on 1 December 2026.
Build it: a presentation from inside Claude, through NOXI's connector
If the comparison ends in a deck for your team, make it without leaving Claude: add NOXI as a custom connector with the address on noxi.ai/connect, sign in once, and ask. The connector builds NOXI's Presentation format, one of its 14. For connectors and plugins in general, see how to add Claude connectors and ChatGPT plugins. One flow, six steps:
Step 1 · Navigate to Customize > Connectors
In Claude, navigate to Customize > Connectors. Anthropic's help centre says custom connectors using remote MCP are available on Free, Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise plans, and "Free users are limited to one custom connector" [2].
Step 2 · Click "+ Add", then "Add custom connector"
Click "+ Add", then "Add custom connector". Enter a name for the connector, NOXI, and add the remote MCP server URL that noxi.ai/connect shows, https://mcp.noxi.ai/mcp. Click "Continue" [2][39].
Step 3 · Review the authentication settings, then click "Add"
Review the authentication settings Claude detected and click "Continue". Under OAuth client, keep "Use Claude's published identity (Recommended)", so no client ID is needed. Finish configuring the connector by clicking "Add" [2][39].
Step 4 · Sign in to NOXI once
Sign in to NOXI in the window that opens, with your free account or a new one, and approve access. If no window opens, click "Connect" next to NOXI in Customize > Connectors [39].
Step 5 · Ask for the presentation in plain words
If the connector is off in a chat, turn it on from the "+" button, then "Connectors" [2]. Name NOXI in the request and say who the deck is for: for example, a ten-slide NOXI presentation of this comparison for a finance team, with fresh web research [39].
Step 6 · Open it in NOXI to edit, present or download
Open the deck in NOXI and edit it by chat, where NOXI changes only what you asked, or by hand. Present it full screen, share a view link that anyone can open without an account, or download PDF or PowerPoint [38][39].
Claude vs Copilot: FAQ
- Claude vs Copilot, which is better?
- On seven assistant rules checked on 4 November 2026, Claude scores 85 and Microsoft Copilot 77. Claude leads on the free plan, long documents and add-ons; Copilot leads on entry price, tools on the paid plan and training control. On our document rules Claude scores 88 and Copilot in Word 80.
- Claude or Copilot for everyday work?
- If you pay for nothing yet, Claude: its free plan documents web search, uploads, file creation and one custom connector, four of the five capabilities our rule counts. If your employer already pays for Microsoft 365, use the Copilot you have inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and add Claude where long documents matter. Checked 4 November 2026.
- Is Claude better than Copilot?
- On our seven assistant rules, yes, by 8 points: 85 against 77 on 4 November 2026. The gap is narrow enough that one Microsoft change would reverse it. If Copilot opened custom MCP connectors to personal plans, its add-on cell would rise from 2 to 5 and Copilot would score 86, one point ahead.
- Claude vs Copilot for work: which suits a Microsoft 365 company?
- Usually Copilot, because it already sits inside the Office apps your company pays for, and Microsoft now lets eligible plans choose Claude models inside Copilot in Word and Excel. For Claude in Excel, an enterprise admin must first enable Anthropic as a Microsoft sub-processor. Claude for Word and Excel are separate Anthropic add-ins on Pro and above.
- Can Copilot use Claude?
- Yes, on some plans. Microsoft's Word help offers Claude models in Copilot in Word on eligible premium subscriptions, and Copilot in Excel supports Claude models with Microsoft 365 Premium or a commercial Copilot subscription; for enterprise customers an admin must enable Anthropic first. Researcher also supports Anthropic's models once an admin allows them. Checked 4 November 2026.
- Is there Claude for Excel?
- Yes, two kinds. Anthropic's own add-in, Claude for Excel, is generally available to Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, and Claude's pricing table marks it "No" on Free. Separately, Microsoft's Copilot in Excel can run Claude models on Microsoft 365 Premium or a commercial Copilot subscription, and, for enterprise customers, once an admin enables Anthropic.
- Which one is cheaper?
- Copilot, at the first paid step: Microsoft 365 Personal is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year in US dollars, while Claude Pro is $17 a month on annual billing or $20 monthly. At the twenty-dollar step they meet: Microsoft 365 Premium costs $199.99 a year and Claude Pro $200, on 4 November 2026.
- Which one trains on my data?
- Microsoft says prompts, responses and file contents in the Copilot app aren't used to train foundation models, which is our rule's top level. Claude's pricing table lists model training as opt-out, and Incognito chats are not used for training. Microsoft's privacy controls page adds that chats may personalise Bing, Edge, MSN and ads unless switched off.
- What is Claude Duet?
- A research preview Anthropic opened on 21 October 2026: a separate app, on iOS, Android and claude.ai, where Claude works as a proactive agent. The launch article says it is available by waitlist, starting with US Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers, while the release notes name Pro and Max. It scores on no rule here.
- Is Microsoft 365 Copilot now called Microsoft Copilot?
- Yes. Microsoft's Learn requirements page, dated 28 October 2026, says Microsoft 365 Copilot is now named Microsoft Copilot, and Copilot Chat drops the 365 as well. The consumer app already used that name, so say which one you mean. The price page still sells the work licence as Microsoft 365 Copilot (add-on), $30.00 per user a month, paid yearly.
